NewAboriginal Health Network meeting

The next Aboriginal Health network meeting is on Monday 13th August at 5.30 pm till 7pm at Nunkuwarrin Yunti, Wakefield St, Adelaide. This month there will be a screening of the film "Why me?", a brief introduction by one of the NWY staff involved in its production and then time for discussion. "Why me" features 5 Aboriginal people in four stories , selected at random, showing the human costs of a policy which removed children from their families and country. NewDarwin Keep Kidneys Healthy

AMGEN is sponsoring a renal seminar on Saturday 1 September, following the Chronic Disease Network conference. Local experts will discuss clinical and public health aspects of kidney disease, with particular focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Isalnder people. The seminar is open to all clinical and public health staff involved in preventing or managing kidney disease, including Aboriginal health workers, GP's, renal nurses, Remote Area Nurses (RAN's), educators etc. If you are interested in attending, please complete the attached forms herewith: Application form , RSVP form , Agenda . 13th International Holistic Health Conference

This conference will be held in the Blue Mountains on 24th -26th of August 2007. More information at the conference website. There is also a scholarship for medical students where the first prize covers transport, accomodation and registration.

Australasian Evaluation Society Conference

Whether it is framed in terms of organisational learning, accountability, quality improvement, evidence-based practice, or results-based management, evaluation is now a core organisational activity for government departments, community agencies and non-government organisations. After more than 20 years of evaluation conferences in Australia and New Zealand, the 2007 conference of the Australasian Evaluation Society will draw together what we have learned about how to do evaluation well - and ways to do it better, to register online click here. Oceania Tobacco Control Conference

The conference will be held in Auckland, New Zealand on 4th–7th ofSeptember 2007. There is an "Indigenous and Pacific Islander Gateway" meeting on the 4th that may be attended separately or as part of the conference. Check the conference website.

Australian Research Management Society Annual Conference

The ARMS annual conference "Fusion 2007: Collaboration with impact" will be held in Adelaide 19th-21st of September 2007. There will be a focus on research involving Aboriginal people. Pre-conference workshops on Indigenous research ethics and intellectual property are planned..

Leaders in Indigenous Medical Education (LIME) conference

38th Public Health Association of Australia Annual Conference and sponsorship for Indigenous workers to attend

This conference will be held from 23rd-26th of September 2007, Alice Springs Convention Centre, Mparntwe, Alice Springs, NT. The theme is 'INEQUITIES & HEALTH, Tackling the Differentials'. Further information is located on the conference website.

The Office of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health (OATSIH) has again generously made some funds available to the Public Health Association of Australia (PHAA) to bring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers to the PHAA Annual Conference. All applications should have been received by the Executive Director of the PHAA (email plaut@phaa.net.au, or post to PO Box 319 CURTIN ACT 2605, or fax to (02) 62825438) by COB 22nd of July 2007.

ANAPHI Teaching and Learning Forum on 26-27 September

ANAPHI (Australian Network of Australian Public Health Institutions) is holding a teaching and learning forum in Alice Springs on 26-27 September. New4th National Indigenous Male Health Convention website now available

The 4th National Indigenous Male Health Convention will take place on 1-2 October 2007 in Adelaide. The theme will be '40th Anniversary of the 1967 Referendum - 40 Years of Rights'. It will precede the 7th National Men's Health Conference, 3-5 October 2007 which is being held in Adelaide. Closing the Gap:

This National Workshop on ATSI Health will be held in Sydney on Wednesday 3rd of October 2007 in conjunction with the RACGP annual scientific meeting. The workshop will again enable GPs and others working in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health in urban, rural and remote Australia to get together and share ideas and expertise and support and inspire each other. The 2007 Mental Health & Alcohol + Other Drugs 'Hope and Recovery' EXPO 5th of October 2007

Port Adelaide Campus of TAFE SA, 1 Mundy Street Port Adelaide. This EXPO is aimed at service providers and program coordinators (though consumers may also find it of value) and is aimed at increasing worker's awareness of other services and programs related to Mental Health and/or Alcohol and Other Drugs. The EXPO will feature a 'trade display' format of services and programs and a concurrent program of speakers and workshops and will offer excellent networking opportunities. NewEmerging Health Policy Research Annual Conference

The Emerging Health Policy Research Conference is being held at the Australian National University on Friday 12 October 2007. The conference is organized to showcase the work in progress of current doctoral and post-doctoral researcher in all areas of health policy — including international health, health systems, history of public health, Indigenous health, health economics and health promotion. 2007 National Research Ethics Conference

The biennial NHMRC National Research Ethics Conference will be held from Tuesday 16th-18th of October 2007, in Melbourne. For more information can be found on the website.

SA Population Health Conference - Population Health Impact of Health Services Research

This conference will be held on Saturday, 20th of October 2007, 9.30am - 4.30pm at Enterprise House, 136 Greenhill Road, Unley (free car park is available under building). It will provide an opportunity for public health and health promotion students and practitioners to present their work to a wide public health audience. A Call for Abstracts will occur in June. This is a Public Health Association of Australia, Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine, Australian Health Promotion Association, and Australasian Epidemiological Association initiative for public health and health promotion students and practitioners, in cooperation with the Departments of Public Health at the University of Adelaide and Flinders University, and Division of Health Sciences, University of South Australia click here to view flyer.

Australian Sociological Association (TASA) conference, 4th-7th of December 2007.

The Joint TASA & SAANZ Conference will be held in Auckland, New Zealand on 4th-7th of December 2007.  The theme is 'Public Sociologies: Lessons and Trans-Tasman Comparisons', and the streams include one on Indigenous issues.  Abstracts are due by 13 August 2007. More information on the conference website.

Critical Race and Whiteness Association Conference

The Critical Race and Whiteness Association Conference will be held on 10-12 December 2007 in Adelaide.  The theme for this year’s conference is Transforming Bodies, Nations & Knowledges.Areas of concern include Indigenous sovereignties, and professional knowledges and practices in education, health and welfare.  Abstracts are due by 31 July.  For more information go to http://www.acrawsa.org.au/conference2007/index.htm

Funding applications should be submitted through Flinders University, Office of Research. Note that closing dates at Flinders Office of Research are at least one week earlier than external closing dates, and the Flinders University Certification Form needs to be completed for every application.
 
Community Grants Website

Grants available from Commonwealth Government agencies can be found through GrantsLINK. GrantsLINK makes it easier to find suitable and relevant grants for community projects. The site can be browsed by subject, agency or grants name or searched by key word. GrantsLINK also offers advice on finding the best source of funding and on writing application forms.

NewFulbright scholarships for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

The Australian-American Fulbright Commission is currently taking applications for scholarships which provide opportunities for Australians to build long term research collaboration and linkages with US universities.  Some postgraduate and postdoctorate scholarships are identified for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. For more information visit the website. NewNational Heart Foundation Travel Grants applications due by 3 September

The National Heart Foundation Travel Grants of up to $1,500 are available to researchers who are based in Australia and who are travelling overseas to present their cardiovascular research at a conference. To be eligible, applicants must be studying for a higher degree and/or  be no more than 5 years postdoctoral.  Indigenous health researchers at any stage of their career wishing to present their research at an appropriate conference in Australia are also eligible for a Travel Grant award.  Applications for travel in October, November and December 2007 are due by Monday 3 September 2007.  For more information go to http://www.heartfoundation.org.au/Professional_Information/Research.htm.

NewCooperative Research Centre for Aboriginal Health – Revised CRCAH website now live at www.crcah.org.au

The Cooperative Research Centre for Aboriginal Health has a ‘new and improved’ website at www.crcah.org.au (no changes to our url).  It now contains more information on staff and key people, project summaries and profiles of students and researchers, etc. CRCAH will continue to add more information and tweak any teething problems.  CRCAH will be circulating a survey through its mailing list, but welcomes any feedback to be sent to Cassandra.Preece@crcah.org.au.  If you are not already on the mailing list, we encourage you to register at http://www.crcah.org.au/aboutus/index2.html. NewSocial Determinants Symposium – final report and case studies available

The report from the Commission on the Social Determinants of Health (CSDH) - International Symposium on Indigenous Health held in Adelaide on 29-30 April, was presented at the meeting of the CSDH in Vancouver, Canada on 7 June 2007 by three Indigenous representatives who attended the forum - Dr Shane Houston (Australia ), Bernice Downey (Canada) and Lucia Ellis (Belize). New Resource Tobacco Control Resource Kit, Talkin’ Up Good Air

NewCongratulations to Faith Thomas, NAIDOC award winner in 2007

Faith Thomas, a South Australian nurse who fought for Aboriginal women to train in the profession - and was the first Aboriginal woman to represent in international sport - has won SA The Premier’s NAIDOC 2007 Award. The award recognises the outstanding achievements and contributions of an extraordinary South Australian who has made a significant difference to the lives and welfare of Aboriginal people in South Australia. Aboriginal Affairs and Reconciliation Minister Jay Weatherill said Ms Thomas was a true leader and an inspiration to the whole community. “Over five decades Ms Thomas has fought tirelessly to improve the quality of life for Aboriginal people all over the state,” Mr Weatherill said. “She has led the way in pursuit of reconciliation and undertaken much of this work in her own time. This award is testament to her hard work, contribution and legacy.” [More about Faith Here and Here]

NewNew editions of 'CCRE Wake Up Call'

The 28th edition of this newsletter is out, also an extra 'occasional bulletin with last minute extras. They contains lots of news and topical information for people working in the Aboriginal health sector, community members, researchers and others. The CCRE Wake Up Call is put out by the Centre of Clinical Research Excellence in Aboriginal Health (a partnership of Flinders University and the Aboriginal Health Council of SA). NewANTaR releases success stories publication

Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation (ANTaR) have released a publication of success stories in Indigenous health to show that Indigenous-led care often gets the best results.  It is called Success Stories in Indigenous Health: a showcase of successful Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health projects.  ANTaR are also seeking more success stories to add to the website. NewThe Art of Change Empowerment Film

Carol Omer has been working with Aboriginal communities using creativity as a strategy for empowerment and healing. A film about this approach can be viewed on http://video.google.com.au/videoplay?docid=-8635016030789298546. There is a Mandala and worksheet manual that accompanies the film. They were developed last year as a tool for encouraging others to explore creativity instead of the usual counselling focus that is a part of creating change.

NewCompensation for Bruce Trevorrow, member of the Stolen Generation

 

For the first time, a member of the Stolen Generation has been awarded compenstaion through the courts. Bruce Allan Trevorrow was stolen from his South Australian Aboriginal family in 1957, when he was 13 months old. His overwhelmingly successful civil claim for damages reveals a litany of abuse inflicted on him by the state. The state has been found guilty of ruining his life by robbing him of an identity, a family, self-esteem and a future. All of this was done in knowing contravention of the law. [Full Story]
